What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
