Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
