Law enforcement officials stated on Monday that they had managed to foil a detailed plan to detonate explosive devices at several facilities operated by two US-based firms on New Year's Eve in the southern part of the state. This action came after the apprehension of individuals part of an radical group espousing anti-system and anti-government ideologies.

Prosecutors said that one of the suspects had devised a detailed plan last month to bomb five or more commercial sites across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The locations were likened to "Amazon-type" fulfillment hubs.

"The plan was specific," a prosecutor said. "It laid out a precise guide to construct explosive devices … and named numerous targets across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."

As per the investigation and legal filings, the scheme entailed planting rucksacks packed with intricate explosive devices that were scheduled to be exploded simultaneously at midnight on New Year's Eve at 5 sites. New Year's Eve was identified as an opportune time as the scheme indicated "fireworks will be going off at this time so explosions will be harder to be noticed."

An eight-page manually written document, called "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," suggested that additional locations could be incorporated. The facilities were categorized as property and buildings owned by two different corporations connected with activities related to interstate and foreign commerce.

The criminal complaint also indicated that two individuals in the group had planned subsequent attacks aimed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel and vehicles with pipe bombs in 2026. One individual according to the complaint commented that such actions "would kill some and intimidate the rest of them."

Such discussions were reportedly talked over both at an face-to-face meeting in Los Angeles and through an encrypted messaging app.

Images featured in the legal filings depict a remote camp with what investigators described as IED-construction components laid out on makeshift work surfaces.

The complaint states that the suspects "carried bomb-making components to the campsite, including various sizes of tubes, suspected potassium nitrate, charcoal briquettes, fuel powder, sulfur powder, and components to be used as fuses, and more."

The plan also included steps on how to construct the bombs and how to avoid leaving traces that could be connected back to the individuals. The individuals had in the recent past acquired chemical ingredients and other items, including buys from e-commerce sites.

Operation and Aftermath

Authorities intervened last week when the suspects were rehearsing the attack in the desert near Twentynine Palms. "They had all the components they required to make an working explosive device at that site," an official commented.
