Alina Habba has resigned as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a judicial decision that invalidated her right to hold the office.

Official Departure

US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, announced the prosecutor's departure on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the appeals court finding made it "untenable" for the official to effectively run her office.

"But do not mistake compliance for surrender," she declared. "The effort will now stretch across the nation."

Court Ruling

Her resignation was triggered by a US appeals court ruled that she had been acting without proper authority as the federal prosecutor. This ruling is likely to affect scores of criminal cases in the state.

The appellate judges said that a acting appointment that skirted the advice and consent of the Senate violated the statute on vacant positions.

Future Role and Reaction

It was also stated that the former prosecutor will stay on at the justice department as a top consultant. She will seek further review of the disqualification, aiming for a different outcome.

Writing online, Bondi argued that judges "must not second-guess the appointment of prosecutors responsible for carrying out the executive branch's core responsibility of criminal prosecution."

Performance in Office

She highlighted her tenure and pointed out that while she was in charge, the city of Newark saw a 20% reduction in crime. Additionally that the Camden experienced its first summer in 50 years free from homicides.

Background and Previous Role

The 41-year-old attorney, originally became part of the former president's legal defense in recent years. Subsequently, she defended Trump in his New York criminal case in the previous year, leading to his conviction on multiple felony counts of document fraud.

Earlier, Habba took on the top New Jersey post, Donald Trump had revealed he was appointing her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, calling her as deeply loyal and a relentless legal advocate.
