"When are you interviewing Haim?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Several famous fans have openly coveted the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy hopefuls.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience called for a new sound – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global audience.

But Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
