The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
