The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
