The Duke of York surrenders his title as York's Duke.
He is relinquishing his honors, such as the Duke of York, he has announced in a own words.
He has been under growing scrutiny over his associations with convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein, with calls for the royal household to take steps against him.
That now looks to have resulted in the prince deciding to of his own accord return his titles and to give up involvement of the Garter Order.
In his message he said he continued to "vigorously dispute the claims against me".
"In discussion with the monarch, and my close and broader family, we have concluded the persistent allegations about me distract from the work of the King and the monarchy," said a message from him.
"I have opted, as I always have, to put my obligation to my relatives and nation first.
"I support my resolution five years ago to withdraw from official duties.
"With the monarch's agreement, we believe I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer hold my designation or the honours which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I vigorously deny the claims against me."
The royal has been involved in a series of scandals, including a court case he settled with an accuser, doubts about his finances and his involvement with an alleged intelligence operative.
He will continue to be a member of royalty - but will stop to be the York's Duke, a designation received from his mother, the former monarch.
Andrew had already ceased to be a "working royal" and had given up the use of his royal style and no longer was seen at state occasions. His status now will be even more reduced.
His ex-wife will be known as Sarah and no longer York's Duchess, but their daughters will continue to have the honor of royal princess.
He has been under strong attention over his connections with notorious figure Jeffrey Epstein, more recently featuring questions about when he had really severed communication.
In his television appearance, he had said that he had cut off all links with Epstein after they had been photographed together in NYC in December 2010.
But emails sent in February 2011 later surfaced implying that he had privately stayed in touch with him, such as swapping a note: "Remain connected and we'll play some more soon!"
There had been growing displeasure in the monarchy at the scandals that continued to surround the royal.
Soon a late publication by the accuser will be issued which is likely to cast more focus on the royal's connection with Ms Giuffre and the financier.
