Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
