Plans for Trump-Putin Meeting Shelved Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Announced

There are "no preparations" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has stated.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to relinquish significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the conflict required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of maximalist demands that include the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the military reduction of the country – a impossible condition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated conversations concerning the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He also said the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently occurred before speculation that the United States was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he remarked.
