New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
