The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
