Democratic officials expressed outrage after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, released on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in defense or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to defend and support this constitution," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Furious Reaction
The video message reportedly provoke a furious reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate publication, he stated: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader issued a joint declaration condemning the comments.
"Violent politics has no place in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who were featured in the video all acted our nation with tremendous national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and risky calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these extreme social media posts and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement stated.
Officials' Defiant Response
The officials who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who love this nation and swore an oath to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it punishable by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they execute their vow to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must come together and censure the former president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the government advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a White House press conference on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is addressing," the official stated. "You have active officials of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the US military, to current military personnel urging them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically encouraging."
