In a major move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The agreement grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
• Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• $250K for placing in the top ten.
• Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 in February, enters a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was curtailed to 56 games due to an side strain. Even with recording often, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 Ks in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has since transitioned to third.

International Pedigree

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a walk-off double that brought home teammates for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the USA, he slugged a game-tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The lefty slugger is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on Monday.
