California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yes, I would be lying if I said no," the governor stated when pressed about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he added.

Rising Profile as a Political Adversary

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile critic of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand Democratic congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent segment on Fox News. Duffy disclosed intentions to cut federal funds from California and suggested eliminating the power to issue trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy stated, after a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to fatalities and four injuries.

Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization on several occasions, which allowed him to receive a trucking license under federal law.

Duffy had before indicated he was withholding $40m from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a recent release countering Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted study found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom should run for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an average of a third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an typical level of more than 40% to under 40%.

In previous months, the governor remarked while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The notion that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, extraordinary," he stated. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
