Arteta Hails ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Reveals Havertz Injury Blow.
Mikel Arteta remains confident that his squad can keep managing with fitness issues after disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.
Extended Absence for German Star
Havertz has been sidelined since the summer following knee surgery. Originally slated to return sooner, the manager stated the player faced a hurdle when advancing his recovery and failed to reach “the required stage.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a group that is far more dependable and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.
Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture
This update creates a dilemma for the midweek fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back from a muscle injury as a substitute. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains available following a lengthy absence.
Fitness Doubts Persist
More doubts surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the weekend encounter. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in the backline for the table-toppers.
Arteta feels the substantial investment on new players in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a much stronger position to handle such absences.
Squad Depth Key to Title Challenge
When asked if more options was helping their championship push, his response was positive. “Indeed, because this season has been worse in some areas, and now the problems with the defence,” he noted.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at this level. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”
Arteta's Support for Suffering Havertz
Addressing the complication noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He was unable to progress to the next level and now it appears like we have solved that issue.”
The manager conveyed his personal desire to welcome him back. “The team is keen to have him. Truly, it’s a player that, in my view, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I see him suffer while sidelined.”
“His fitness history is phenomenal, he’s been always available, and I can’t wait to have him back with the squad and playing because I think it’s going to be a massive boost.”
